Co-operatives are voluntary organisations, open to persons willing to accept responsibilities of membership. This relationship can be voluntarily ended at any time.
Co-operatives are democratic organisations controlled by their members who actively participate in setting their policies and making decisions. Members have equal voting rights (one member, one vote).
Members contribute equitably to and democratically control the capital of their Co-operative. At least part of that capital is usually the common property of the Co-operative.
Co-operatives are autonomous, self-help organisations controlled by their members.
Co-operatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-operatives.
Co-operatives serve their members most effectively by working together through local, national, regional and international structures.
While focusing on members' needs, Co-operatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies accepted by their membership.
The beginnings were humble and the work was hard. That didn’t matter because there was a job to be done, and a principle at stake.
Less than ten years after WWII plumbers were still having trouble getting materials and with no trade discount, it was hard to make a decent living.
On 14th April 1955 a meeting was held in Pitt Street Sydney, next to where Telstra House is today, with the view to form a Co-operative Trading Society.
Four men were elected as Directors of a new society that went by the name the Plumbers’ Supplies Co-operative Limited.
Their stated goal was as simple and unambiguous then as it is today.
“We are a specialist trade supplier to the plumbing and building industry”.
From such humble beginnings your Co-op now has annual sales approaching $150 million, with monies returned to members by way of discounts, dividends and rebates.
It’s a great story, (made all the more pleasing by the fact the Co-op is owned by members to benefit members).
But there is no time to rest. As the world changes the way it does business, your co-op is changing too.
Here’s to the next 60 years.
Proud Past and A Strong Future
Sometimes it feels that change is the only constant. Not content to live in the past, your Co-op has a clear picture on where the business is headed.
Rationalisation and mergers are seeing the rise of larger competitors. Customer expectations are on the rise as well.
Steps like sourcing and manufacturing our own branded supplies will make us stronger against such trends. Technology too is another driver of change and we have taken steps to ensure information to members is:
New, higher levels of Customer Service at all branches will benefit members, as will product training and expanded product lines.
Whatever the challenge, we will make sure we will anticipate it and meet it.
Over the past sixty years the growth and management of our Co-operative has been overseen by various Boards of Directors. The Board consists of four member Directors and two Independent Directors. The introduction of Independent Directors in recent years has had a positive influence on the success of the business as it has provided both management and Member Directors with a broad range of guidance and oversight from the wider corporate community.
In accordance with Co-operative law the Board of Plumbers Supplies Co-operative must consist of a majority of Member Directors, this is to ensure that the organisation maintains a strong member focus. The Board has four Member Directors, three from New South Wales and one from Victoria, who are elected on a rotational basis for three year terms.
The ongoing success of the Plumbers Supply Co-operative over the past sixty years is, no doubt, primarily due to the Co-operative structure under which we operate - we have good governance thanks to a proactive and knowledgeable board
